Becton Dickinson in MoU with paediatrics academy

Our Bureau

Kochi, Dec. 23 Becton Dickinson India, a leading global medical technology company, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Academy of Paediatrics – Kochi to promote safe injection practices in all the government and private hospitals across the State.

The first phase includes inviting and selecting 30 hospitals to participate in Safe Hospital initiative for the programme from across the State. Workshops will be conducted to train doctors and nurses for the ‘Safe Injection Practices’. All hospitals that undergo safety training and adhere to the required safety guidelines developed by IAP and BD will be certified as ‘Safe I Hospitals’.

These hospitals will practice safe injection, safe infusion, injection control, safe practices for healthcare workers and safe management for biomedical waste.

Studies conducted in India along with anecdotal evidence point toward a large and growing problem of unsafe injection practices. A genuine and urgent need exists to address this critical issue. With the signing of this MoU, we reaffirm our ongoing commitment to building awareness and working toward minimising the spread of infectious diseases caused by unsafe injection practices, Mr Ram Sharma, Managing Director, BD India, said.

IAP - Kerala has taken a lead role in promoting safe injection practices. In 2006, IAP conducted 20 workshops across the State and managed to train 500 doctors and 4,000 nurses. We are hopeful that with the support of the State Government, we will be able to come out with the desired solutions, Dr S. Kamath, National Coordinator for Safe Injection Programme, IAP, said.
