Bharat Dynamics to set up torpedo production centre

Facility at Vizag likely to go on stream in 6-12 months.

Visakhapatnam, Dec. 23 The Bharat Dynamics Ltd, Hyderabad, is setting up a torpedo production centre here in a year or so, according to Dr V. Bhujanaga Rao, the Director of the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL).

He was speaking at a press meet on the occasion of a two-day national seminar on acoustics and noise suppression technologies organised jointly by NSTL and the Acoustical Society of India. A two-day exhibition was also organised on the occasion, as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was celebrating its Golden Jubilee.

Dr Rao said NSTL was mainly working on lightweight and heavyweight torpedoes and Bharat Dynamics was producing torpedoes based on the designs and technologies provided by the lab. “The company has decided to set up an additional production centre here and the land has been acquired. It may go on stream in six months to one year,” he explained.

For awareness

He spoke at length about noise suppression technologies and advances in acoustics, which made it possible to produce submarines and other underwater vehicles that could move undetected by the enemy. “To make the general public and students of science and technology of the wonderful advances in the field, which have many civilian applications as well, we are organising the exhibition and seminar,” he explained.

Programme details

Earlier, the seminar was inaugurated by Vice-Admiral Nirmal Verma, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, who was the chief guest. He spoke of the relevance of the science of acoustics in many defence-related technologies and the need for further research in the area.

Prof B. Satyanarayana, Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, also spoke about the recent acoustical advances.

Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Controller of R&D, DRDO, delivered the key-note address, dwelling at length on the advances made in the field and their applications, especially civilian applications. Specifically, he referred to the research work being undertaken by the NSTL in the field of hydro-dynamics in association with the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, and IIT, Kharagpur, and its relevance to the field.
