SBI Web site hacked, but no data loss

Mumbai, Dec. 27 The menace of hacking has come to haunt India’s largest bank, State Bank of India .

The bank’s Web site was paralysed on Christmas Eve as hackers, believed to be from a foreign country, broke through the bank’s stringent IT defences.

“Attempts were made to disrupt the system from outside the country. However, there was no loss of data,” said Mr R.P. Sinha, Deputy Managing Director (Information Technology), SBI, at the launch of the bank’s first Internet banking kiosk at Mumbai Central Railway Station on Saturday.

The bank has three million Net banking users. “The system is under repair and should be functional by tonight,” said a senior official with SBI’s IT department.

Elaborating on the utility of the kiosk, Mr Sinha said customers of the bank can now book their railway tickets through Net banking kiosks within the ATM outlets located in railway stations. The bank, which opened the first kiosk here on Saturday, plans to set up 383 similar outlets by the end of this financial year.

Kiosk services

At these kiosks, the bank’s customers can book their tickets through the IRCTC gateway and get a printed electronic slip instantly.

The customer would have to pay Rs 10 per booking to SBI, besides the fees that IRCTC charges. Customers can also avail themselves of services such as fund transfer, balance enquiry, and payment of utility bills.
