Dense fog disrupts air traffic in Delhi

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Dec 29 The first major fog in the National Capital played havoc with delay in flight operations. There was low visibility for eleven-and-a-half hours which affected 62 flights, including 35 domestic and 27 international flights. Airport officials said that 19 flights were cancelled and eight of them were diverted to other airports, including Jaipur and Mumbai. The visibility at the IGI airport fell below 100 metres and runway visibility range (RVR) dipped to less than 50 metres. This led to disruption in normal flight operations.

In many of the cases, airlines did not allow passengers to disembark at the airports where the flight had been diverted. This was to ensure that no further delay in landing is caused after the airline gets clearance from the authorities for landing in Delhi. Heavy fog enveloped the IGI airport at around 04.00 am forcing the authorities to divert several international flights, Royal Jordan from Amman to Delhi, Jet Airways from Dubai to Delhi and Air India flight from Paris to Delhi was diverted to Mumbai. Among the flights cancelled, at least 4 were of Kingfisher, five of Jet, two of Indigo and at least one of Air India domestic.

According to a Jet Airways’ release, 13 flights departing from Delhi and another 10 arriving into Delhi were rescheduled. On Sunday too, due to similar weather conditions, Emirates flight from Dubai to Lahore was diverted to Delhi airport and Air India flight from Dubai to Amritsar too had been diverted.
