Fog cover to hang through dawn of New Year

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 29 Dense fog conditions prevailed over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan during the 24 hours ending Monday morning.

Model predictions suggest that the foggy conditions would continue to mark the early morning hours during the next two to three days as well, an India Meteorological Department outlook said.

The prevailing cold wave would lift when the warm, rising and moist air associated an incoming western disturbance filters into the region around January 3, 2009.

Snowfall or rainfall is indicated for the hilly regions while adjoining plains would witness cloudy conditions and isolated rainfall.

TEMPERATURE INVERSION

Residual moisture left behind by passing western disturbances can gain further in intensity if the mercury dips suitably and winds calm down.

Moisture is sourced from the westerly systems originating from as far away as the Mediterranean of the West Atlantic.

Meanwhile, a western disturbance lay over Jammu and Kashmir after slipping in overnight on Monday from over northeast Afghanistan and adjoining Pakistan. It is likely to move east-northeastwards skipping the plains.

An IMD update said cold wave conditions prevailed in some parts of north Madhya Maharashtra on Sunday.

Night temperatures were appreciably to markedly below normal in some parts of west Madhya Pradesh, north Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Rayalaseema and of Tamil Nadu; and below normal in some parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Orissa, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, Marathawada, Telangana, Karnataka and south Kerala.
