10.18 m new telephone subscribers in November

New Delhi, Dec. 29 The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said that 10.18 million new telephone connections have been added during November as compared with 10.29 million connections added in October 2008.

The total number of telephone connections reached 374.13 million, taking the overall tele-density to 32.34 per cent.

The total wireless subscriber base, including both GSM and CDMA, stood at 336.08 million at the end of November 2008.

A total of 10.35 million wireless subscribers have been added during the month compared with 10.42 million wireless subscribers added in October.

In the wire line segment, the subscriber base has decreased to 38.05 million as against 38.22 million subscribers in October 2008, registering a drop of 0.17 million.

Broadband base

Total broadband subscribers base has reached 5.28 million compared with 5.05 million in the previous month.

The country is the second-largest wireless market in the world, trailing only China with more than 600 million mobile subscribers.

Top mobile operator Bharti Airtel, which bagged 2.72 million new subscribers in November, taking its total subscriber base to 82.9 million, led the additions.

No. 2 Reliance Communications added 1.77 million subscribers to have a total of 59.6 million, while third-ranked Vodafone-controlled Vodafone Essar gained 2.06 million subscribers to 58.8 million.

Other mobile operators include Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Aircel and state-run firms Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Ltd.
