New Business Jain Irrigation bags Rs 270-cr European export order Our Bureau Mumbai, Dec. 30 Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd (JISL) has bagged order worth Rs 270 crore from its European customer for supply of dehydrated white onion in 2009. Mr Ashok Jain, Vice-Chairman Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd, said “We have developed high-solid onion varieties, which are helping Indian farmers to produce more and in turn allowing us to give what the international market expects.” The company has six fruit and vegetable processing plants in India and one in the US. It processes over 350,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables a year. “Globally the market for dehydrated vegetables is estimated to be over 900,000 tonnes and onions account for major portion of this demand. India is the second largest producer of dehydrated onions in the world. JISL accounts for 40 per cent of the total dehydrated onion exports from India,” he added. The company is currently working with more than 4,000 farmers to produce fruits and vegetables on contract farming and buyback arrangement. Its team of agronomists and agricultural scientists work hand-in-hand with farmers to train them on right agricultural practices to get better yields and good returns for their agricultural produce, it said.
