Power supply woes: Cos spend more time reworking schedules

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore, Dec. 31 Managements are today spending enormous time revising production schedules to keep pace with the frequent modifications and announcements with regard to supply of power.

And this exercise is proving more costly than the cost of power itself, say industry insiders.

The energy crisis has driven a good number of units out of production. The remaining ones, sources say, would also follow suit “if this trend goes unchecked”.

They were piqued with the State Government’s proposal to scrap the power cut scheme and, instead, allow units to operate five days a week. The proposal has not only taken the stakeholders by surprise but rocked their production plans, a schedule that the units were just getting adjusted to.

Top executives of most companies were on Tuesday busy reworking their production plans as just a day was left for the Tamil Nadu industries to adopt to the five-day week schedule.

“Some kind of sickness has already engulfed the units. We are today not permitted to pursue the normal course of operation. Instead of focusing on production and marketing, we seem to spend more time on the drawing board, reworking our production schedule.

“With most units operating at less than 50 per cent, we are unable to plan the work schedule for the workers. This has, besides affecting production, dampened the morale of the workforce,” an industrialist said on condition of anonymity.

Industry insiders also said that those that sought bulking and transfer of quota within the units in the group just about a month ago to tide over the power situation would have to rework not only the production schedule but also resolve this issue.
