`Strengthen rail tracks'

Madurai, Dec. 31

The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has appealed to the Ministry of Railways to ensure the safety of rails in tracks to avoid possible mishaps. In a letter addressed to the Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr R.Velu, the association President, Mr K.S.R. Natarajan, drawing attention to reports of damages to rails in the routes between Madurai and Dindigul and Madurai and Virudhunagar, said possible accidents have been averted due to the vigilant and timely attention of the railwaymen at work. However, the reports have created an apprehension among the people about safe journey by trains. There is a need to evaluate and assess the strength of the rails and replace them with strong ones. The increase in the number of compartments and wagons in use per train have put pressure on the tracks. There is also the necessity to verify whether such damages are reported from other parts of the country, he said. - Our Correspondent
