Kolkata, Dec. 31 There has been a severe setback to the image of West Bengal post Singur, the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr Somnath Chatterjee, said here on Wednesday.

“It is sad that the auto factory could not be set up, more so because the Singur issue is being cited by many to dissuade prospective investors from investing in the State, which is a matter of concern,” Mr Chatterjee said while speaking at the valedictory session of 22nd Industrial India Trade Fair.

The progress of West Bengal had been hampered by agitation over land acquisitions; he said, and added that the development should not lead to confrontation.

Mr Nirupam Sen, West Bengal Industrial Minister, said that there had been no slowdown in investments into the State so far. However, the Government should take adequate measures to expedite the process of industrialisation, he added.

Mr Sen identified private investments as a key factor for industrialisation.

The State Government, Mr Sen said, was working with industry experts and local people to work out the modalities of inclusive growth. “It is essential to take people into confidence while adopting the path of industrialisation. We are working on the modalities of land acquisition and rehabilitation process in order to achieve an inclusive growth,” he said.
