Status quo on power cut to continue: TNEB

Our Bureau

Chennai, Dec. 31 The Tamil Nadu Government has decided not to implement the two-day power cut for industries and commercial establishments it had planned from January 1.

According to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, the ‘status quo’ will continue on the power cut for now — 40 per cent power cut for industries with High Tension supply and 20 per cent for Low Tension commercial connections, apart from peak hour restrictions.

On Monday, following a consultation with industry representatives, the State Government had announced that instead of cutting supply daily, it would consider five days of uninterrupted power supply with two days of power cut during a week. This was to come into effect from New Year.

However, industry associations, including the Confederation of Indian Industry and the associations representing the textile sector, had strongly opposed the proposal.

Examining options

The electricity board officials said that in deference to the wishes of the industry, the five-day-week plan for industries has been called off.

Other options are being examined but for now, the existing power supply routine would continue.

In the past few months, the State has been facing a 1,500-2,000 MW of power shortage, resulting in the State Government restricting power supply.

The Confederation of Indian Industry has thanked the State Government for considering the industries’ views on the issue. It has expressed hope that with improved supply, the State Government would take steps to allocate more power to the industry.
