The country’s first tea park is being launched in Siliguri. The foundation-stone will be laid on January 15. Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Power, and Mr Ashok Bhattacharyya, West Bengal Minister for Urban Development, among others, will be present.

To be spread over 50 acres provided by the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority, the proposed tea park will consist of latest warehousing facilities as well as units for value-addition such as tea blending, packeting, packaging, bagging and so on, while the infrastructure support will be provided by Tea Board with funding from the Commerce Ministry, the individual units will be set up by private firms. It will be another six to nine months before the detailed project will be ready.

Another in Kolkata

Mr Basudeb Banerjee, Chairman, Tea Board, said a similar tea park was also being planned in Kolkata, and for this, discussion was being held with the Kolkata Port Trust for acquiring land within the port premises.
