Cabinet reshuffle triggers top-level changes in MIDC

Mumbai, Jan 4 The recent cabinet reshuffle in Maharashtra seems to have triggered top-level changes in Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation(MIDC).

The current Chief Executive Officer of MIDC, Mr Rajiv Jalota, confirmed to Business Line that he has been made the Commissioner of Employment and Self-Employment. This post was earlier held by Mr Gorakh Megh, who retired on December 31.

Dr Kshatrapati Shivaji, the current Information Technology (IT) Secretary of Maharashtra, has been roped in for the top job at MIDC. Dr Shivaji, belongs to the 1986 batch of the Indian Administrative Service. Prior to being the IT Secretary of Maharashtra, he was the Development Commissioner (Industries).

Mr Jalota had joined MIDC as Chief Executive Officer in January 2006. Prior to this, he was the District Collector of Latur in Maharashtra.

MIDC, a project of the Government of Maharashtra provides businesses with infrastructure such as land (open plot or built-up spaces), roads, water supply, drainage facilities and street lights. It has played a pivotal role in multinational corporations, such as Volswagen and General Motors, setting up industrial units in Maharashtra.

This reshuffle comes barely few days after a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) stated that between 2002-03 to 2006-07, Rs 1.52 crore was spent on renovating offices and residences of Mr Ashok Chavan, the then Industry Minister (and current Chief Minister of Maharashtra) and other ministers of state using funds of MIDC.

“MIDC not only failed to obtain permission of the State Government, but also fudged accounts and booked the expenditure under Maintenance and Repairs to Industrial Area,” the report pointed out. The report was also critical of land allotted to the Vilasrao Deshmukh Foundation (Mumbai), an educational trust, saying MIDC incurred a loss of Rs 1.19 crore in the process.
