NMPT cargo handling up 3% in April-Dec

Our Bureau

Mangalore, Jan. 4 New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has witnessed a growth of 2.97 per cent in cargo handling in the first nine months of the current financial year. The port handled 27.71 million tonnes of cargo from April to December in the current financial year as against 26.91 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

A press release by Mr S. Gopalakrishna, Traffic Manager of NMPT, here on Saturday attributed this growth to the increased handling of project cargo, fertiliser, iron ore fines, lime stone, cement, among others.

Till the end of December in the current fiscal, the port handled 22,752 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers as against 15,437 TEUs in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The railway-bound cargo stood at 46.16 lakh tonnes (43.14 lakh tonnes) during the period.

The release said that railway siding was extended to the wharf area for faster turnaround time of the rakes. To meet the increased flow of railway-bound traffic, one more railway line was added recently at the marshalling yard.

It said that NMPT is poised for a big leap in cargo handling in the backdrop of increased movement of cargo from the hinterland.
