Plea for replacing old rails

Madurai, Jan. 5

The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has urged the Ministry of Railways to replace old rails in Madurai division with new ones to avert accidents and ensure safety of passengers. In a letter addressed to the Union Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, the chamber secretary, Mr P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian, said that in Madurai division cracks in rails are often reported and the railways must take precautionary measures to avert fatal accidents. The rails have been laid ma ny years ago and are unable to bear the weight of excess loaded goods wagons and coaches that are often overcrowded. Temporary rectifications would not do and a permanent solution is required, he said.
