Shipping/Ports GPPL starts dredging at Pipavav port Our Bureau Kolkata, Jan. 5 Dredging has started at Pipavav port in Gujarat, according to Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd (GPPL) sources. Promoted by APM Terminals, GPPL has entered into a contract with Zinkcon Marine (Singapore) Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Royal Boskalis Westminster, for undertaking dredging which, it is estimated, will cost Rs 260 crore. On completion of the job before the monsoon this year, the draught of the port is to rise to 14.5 metres from the present 12.5 m, add GPPL sources. In a statement, Mr Prakash Tulsiani, Interim CEO, GPPL, said that every effort would be made to ensure minimal disruption to vessel movement and cargo operation of the port during the period the dredging work would be on. “With deeper draught, Pipavav offers a safe port for the large container vessels that cannot call at most other Indian ports. “Pipavav has road and rail connectivity and the rail freight cost from our on-dock facility to inland container depots located in northern India are low and the maximum rail link capacity is 22 trains each direction”, Mr Tulsiani observed.
