Won’t succumb to pressure to reinstate employees: Cummins

Our Bureau

Pune, Jan. 6 “We will not succumb to any compulsion or pressure to take the dismissed employees back on to the company payrolls.” This is the statement made by the management of Cummins India Ltd, manufacturers of diesel engines.

Talking to presspersons, Mr Vikram Jaisinghani, Vice-President, Industrial Engine Business Unit, CIL, and Mr Dinesh Castellino, Vice-President, Legal and Company Secretary, Cummins Group of Companies, said the management had communicated on several occasions that the reinstatement of these sacked employees would not be possible as they were found guilty of indulging in anti-company activities.

Six shopfloor employees had been dismissed in January 2007 after a year-long enquiry. Mr Jaisinghani noted that the dismissed employees had not approached the labour courts for settlement but had joined hands with the Shiv Sena.

Shiv Sena agitation

Shiv Sena has taken up the cause and has been agitating in front of the Cummins office in Kothrud for the past two months. He said the Shiv Sainiks had intensified their agitation and the recent one was on December 30, 2008, which was carried out despite a December 19 court order, that restricted the agitators from entering a radius of 500 m of the Cummins facility .

Cummins started its operations in Maharashtra in 1962 with a single facility at Kothrud. Now it has nine facilities in the State.
