Pune international film fest to kick off tomorrow

Pune, Jan. 6 The 7th Pune International Film Festival 2009 will be held at Pune from January 8-15. Around 150 films from 42 countries will be screened during the festival, including 109 films from 30 countries in the World Competition category. Thirty entries have been received in the Marathi section.

Amongst the highlights at PIFF 2009 will be the screening of retrospectives of Doron Eran (Israel), Raj Kapoor (India), Aki Kaurismaki (Finland) and Alain Resnais (France), Tributes of Youssef Chahine, Paul Newman (USA), Shridhar (India), Jayashree Gadkar (India), B.R. Chopra (India) and Vijay Tendulkar (India) and old and rare films from the collection at the National Film Archives of India.

The festival will be inaugurated at the Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch by Mr Anand Sharma, Minister of State for External Affairs and Information and Broadcasting on January 8.

The cash prizes in the competition section of world cinema are the Prabhat Award for Best International Film (Rs 10 lakh), Best International Director (Rs 5 lakh), Sant Tukaram award for Best Marathi film (Rs 5 lakh) given by the State Government and PIFF awards for Best International Actor (Male and Female) Rs 5 lakh each.
