Rupee weakens by 17 paise

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Jan. 6 The rupee depreciated by 17 paise against the dollar on Tuesday, as the greenback strengthened against other major currencies in overseas markets.

The domestic currency opened at 48.60 and touched an intra-day low of 48.77. It closed at 48.70, against Monday’s close of 48.53/56.

The rupee traded in a narrow range with the intra-day movement in the range of 20 paise, said a dealer with a public sector bank.

Though there were FII inflows, the strength of the dollar undermined the rupee. However, offloading of dollars by exporters extended support to the domestic currency, the dealer said.

In the forward premia market, the six-month closed lower at 2.24 per cent (2.4) and the one-year closed at 1.74 per cent (1.82).
