Denmark keen to source skilled manpower

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Jan 7 Denmark is ready to look at sourcing skilled manpower from India in various areas such as IT, medical and engineering, according to Mr Ole Lonsmann Poulsen, Ambassador of Denmark to India.

“The lack of skilled manpower is a major constraint for growth in Denmark. We are, therefore, attracting skilled manpower from various parts of the world, particularly India in order to overcome this constraint,” Mr Poulsen told newspersons on the sidelines of an interactive session organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce here on Wednesday.

Exports from Denmark stood at $400 million while imports from India were at $800 million during 2007-08, Mr Poulsen pointed out. “Though we do not have the bilateral trade figures for this year, during the period January-September 2008, we have witnessed an increase in bilateral trade. We are hopeful of registering 10-15 per cent growth this year,” he said.

Food processing, renewable energy, IT and mobile phone technology could be some of the key areas of trade between West Bengal and Denmark, he observed. However, despite the improved business environment only few Danish companies have shown interest in West Bengal, Mr Poulsen pointed out. “Danish companies are looking for transparency, rule of law and respect for agreements and contracts,” he added.
