Oilseeds & Edible Oil Dec oilmeal exports flat on global meltdown Our Bureau Mumbai, Jan. 7 Oil meal exports rose marginally by 4 per cent in December to 7.03 lakh tonnes (lt) against 6.77 lt exported in November. Exports were almost stagnant at 15.33 lt (15.30 lt) in third quarter of the financial year 2009. “Exports were hit by the global economic recession, fall in realisation in international market and non performance of export contracts for oilmeals by some overseas buyers,” said Mr B.V. Mehta, Executive Director, Solvent Extractors’ Association of India. The overall export of oilmeals between April and December was at 40.47 lt against 29.86 lt in same period last year, a rise of 35 per cent. Soyabean meal exports in the nine months were at 30.56 lt (19.81 lakh tonnes) and rapeseed meal 7.02 lt (5.97 lt). Export of other oilmeals such as rice bran extraction, castor seed extraction and groundnut extractions have decreased in first nine months of the 2008-09 fiscal. Realisation of all oil meals dipped in December due to rupee depreciation against dollar. Soyameal prices were down at $284 a tonne in December against $389 a tonne in the same period last year, while rapeseed extension prices fell to $178 a tonne from $213 in December 2007. Groundnut meal was down at $200 a tonne ($313 a tonne) and castorseed was at $74 a tonne (111 a tonne). The f.o.b earning during December 2008 was at Rs 965 crore, while total f.o.b earnings between April and December 2008 were estimated at Rs 5,934 crore. Major importersBetween April and December, Vietnam has shown a rise in import of oilmeals from India with 10.87 lt against 9.13 lt last year, which consists of 9.43 lt of soyabean meal, 44,340 tonnes of rapeseed meal and 99,149 tonnes of rice bran extraction. South Korea reported import of 6.15 lt (5.35 lt). Imports consist of 3.25 lt of rapeseed meal, 1.41 lt soyabean meal and 1.49 lt of castor seed meal. Japan bought a total of 5.96 lt of oilmeal against 4.29 lt last year. Port-wise exportThe export from Kandla between April and December was reported at 23.39 lt (accounting for 58 per cent of total imports). From Mumbai, including JNPT, handled 8.95 lt (22 per cent), Bedi 4.13 lt (8 per cent), Vizag 1.95 lt (5 per cent), Kakinada 79,368 tonnes (2 per cent), Mundra 67,363 tonnes (2 per cent) and Kolkata 49,862 tonnes (1 per cent).
