Airlines International passenger traffic up 34.7% at Mangalore airport A.J. Vinayak Mangalore, Jan. 8 Mangalore airport – which connects coastal Karnataka with Gulf countries — recorded a growth of 34.78 per cent in international passenger traffic during the calendar year 2008. Mr M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, Airports Authority of India, Mangalore, told Business Line that the airport handled 1.86 lakh international passengers during 2008 against 1.38 lakh international passengers in the previous calendar year 2007. The frequency of international operations was increased, and two more destinations — Kuwait and Sharjah — got connected with Mangalore during the year. The international aircraft movement witnessed more than 100 per cent growth during the year. The airport witnessed 2,396 international aircraft movements in 2008 against 1,104 movements in 2007, recording a growth of 117 per cent. At present, Mangalore airport is connected with international destinations such as Dubai, Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha, Sharjah and Kuwait. The first international operation began at Mangalore airport on October 3, 2006, with the landing of an Air India Express flight from Dubai. DOMESTIC trafficThe domestic passenger traffic recorded a marginal growth of 0.75 per cent during 2008. The airport handled 5.39 lakh domestic passengers in 2008 against 5.35 lakh passengers in 2007. However, the domestic aircraft movement recorded a growth of 25.77 per cent during the year. During 2008, the airport recorded 9,790 domestic aircraft movements against 7,788 in the previous year. Overall traffic during the calendar year 2008 recorded a growth of 7.57 per cent. During the period, the airport handled 7.25 lakh passengers against 6.74 lakh passengers in the previous calendar year. The total aircraft movements increased to 12,186 in 2008 from 8,892 in 2007, recording a 37 per cent growth. More Stories on : Airlines
