Chennai, Jan. 8 The smart card for migrant Indian workers will be operational from June 1 this year, according to Mr Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs. The smart card was earlier announced by the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, while inaugurating the three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Day event.

Summing up the first day’s proceedings of the event, Mr Ravi said those who migrate from India to other countries to work would be issued smart cards by the Government. The smart card will have all the crucial information such as passport details, address, insurance details and contact persons in case of emergency, he told newspersons on the sidelines of the event.

Mr Ravi said existing workers abroad would not be included in the programme.

The minister said the Centre has decided to permit overseas citizen cardholders with professional qualifications in specialised areas such as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and law to practice in India.
