Dock workers' wage issue

Mumbai, Jan 8

In a joint meeting of the Bipartite Wage Negotiating Committee (BWNC) and Indian Ports Association (IPA) held in New Delhi on Tuesday, it was clarified that the major ports and dock labour boards are not public sector undertakings. And that their wage settlement will be for 10 years with effect from January 1, 2007. The All India Port & Dock Workers' Federation (AIPDWF) issued a statement in Mumbai saying, Dr A.K. Chanda, Chairman of IPA and BWNC, has clarified that major ports and dock labour boards are not public sector undertakings and therefore, the question of applying DPE guidelines to PSU to the port sector does not arise. The President of AIPDWF, Mr S.R. Kulkarni, also said that the next meeting of the BWNC will be held on January 21 in New Delhi to consider the 10 year wage structure proposal of the management. The wage settlement is likely to be signed before the end of January, the statement added. - Our Bureau
