Hyderabad, Jan. 8

The Andhra Pradesh Government has assured full support to the public-private health initiatives – EMRI and HMRI – which have ties with the beleaguered Satyam Computer promoters.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who convened a meeting of the chiefs of the two organisations, the Health Minister and officials, also promised funds, if required, in the wake of the crisis in Satyam.

At present, the State involvement is 95 per cent, while there is a 5 per cent commitment from Raju & Associates in EMRI and HMRI, in the States they operate.

The Chief Executive Officer of EMRI (Emergency Management and Research Institute), Mr Venkat Changavalli, told Business Line that Mr Ramalinga Raju had personally called him on Monday to promise his continued support to EMRI despite the happenings at Satyam.

“We are operating in eight States with the State Governments contributing 95 per cent of the expenditure. At present, EMRI is well-financed and healthy in its operations,” he added.

The EMRI operates 1,450 ambulances, attending to 7,200 emergencies a day.

In HMRI (Health Management & Research Institute), Satyam is delivering the software knowledge.

Mr Balaji Utla, CEO, said, “We don’t foresee any impact and are confident that we can handle the growing activities. We are also developing the software needed.”

HMRI receives nearly 50,000 calls a day. It runs 100 vans, which are on the move in 8 districts and work is on full swing now, he added.

In addition to these two, Byrraju Foundation and Satyam Foundation are shown by Satyam Computer as its corporate social responsibility arms. The common thread linking them is the financial commitment by Satyam promoters and technology support.

Mr Verghese K. Jacob, Chief Integrator and Lead Partner, Byrraju Foundation, said, “Though initially we used to get lots of funding from the Raju family, the dependence in the last two to three years has come down and it is at present around Rs 12 crore to Rs 15 crore a year.”

“As far as the Foundation is concerned, even if the level of funding comes down we are confident that we can leverage funds from external sources,” he added.
