Fight corruption, Prahalad tells Indian diaspora

Our Bureau

Chennai, Jan 8 Describing corruption as the “biggest challenge that is holding development of India back,” noted management guru, Prof. C.K. Prahalad, exhorted the Indian diaspora to stand up and fight it.

Speaking at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2009, a conference of Indians living abroad, Prof Prahalad noted that corruption in the country is “systemic”. No country in the world that is corrupt is rich, he said.

Trained manpower

Dr Prahalad said that India would have a huge youthful population in an aging world and pointed to the enormous scope for providing trained manpower to the world. In this context, he stressed on the need for training “500 million Indians in basic skills” such as masonry and carpentry.

He said that the system of delivering such fundamental training in technology ought to be thought out afresh. Such new initiatives ought to be delivered through freshly designed systems because the existing system, because of embedded corruption, is “status quo oriented”.

Dr Prahalad said that when the global economic crisis ends, India that is among the least affected by the crisis could well emerge a world economic leader. India must seize the moment because the “crisis is too precious to waste”.

He said that Indian managers need to understand not just trends but also “discontinuity”. Later, asked to elaborate on this, he gave as an example for “discontinuity” the emergence of opportunities to mobilise public opinion and views through social networking on the internet and channels such as the YouTube.
