Santanu Sanyal

Kolkata, Jan. 9

The Railway Board has downgraded one of its key outfits in Kolkata.

The post of Executive Director Rail Movement (EDRM) has been abolished. The office of the Directorate of Rail Movement will now be headed by a junior officer.

A new post, Adviser, Logistics & Marketing, has been created in Rail Bhawan for looking after, among other things, also the jobs so far handled by EDRM and Mr D.P. Pande, who was till recently Executive Director (Traffic Transportation Movement) in Rail Board, is to shoulder the responsibility, it is learnt.

This has set in motion a chain of transfers.

Transfers

Mr D. Nath, the Chief Freight Traffic Manager (CFTM) of East Central Railway, has been asked to take over the position vacated by Mr Pande and Mr G.K. Mohanty, till recently EDRM, the position vacated by Mr Nath.

Originally known as Movement Directorate of the Indian Railways, the office of the erstwhile EDRM here has been doing a critical job – co-ordination of rail movement of coal throughput, particularly for power, steel, and cement plants, and other industries located far away from the coal producing areas.

Eastern region being the home of coal mines, almost the entire country depends on the region for supply of coal.

Subsequently, the Directorate of Movement became the Directorate of Rail Movement as the scope of the office was widened also to include the movement of other critical inputs, particularly iron ore.

EDRM’s office here has been dismantled at a time when the eastern region is again gaining importance with the prospects of more investments in core sector, particularly steel and power brightening.
