Trade & Labour Unions Inter-State vehicular movement hit Our Bureaus New Delhi/Kolkata, Jan. 9 Inter-State movement of goods by roads appear to have been hit on Friday, while intra-State movement by-and-large continued. Whether the inter-State movement of commercial vehicles was due to the unavailability of fuel or because of truckers’ strike could not be independently ascertained. Friday was the fifth day of strike called by a transporters body, AIMTC, and third day of strike called by officers union of oil companies. Meanwhile, several All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) office bearers including its President Mr Charan Singh Lohara and Secretary Mr S. Venugopal were arrested. The intra-State movement of vehicles was not impacted. “Wholesale prices of vegetables were not impacted, rather potato prices saw a drop,” said Mr J.K. Bansal, Chairman, APMC, Azadpur Mandi, the largest wholesale market in Delhi. A top container train operator said, “While our trailer movement was not impacted, we faced problems due to unavailability of diesel”. According to the Federation of West Bengal Truck Operators Association, a body supporting the strike, “Intra-State movement of vehicles remained unaffected. But, arrival of trucks from other States is likely to go down”. Warning the striking truckers of more arrests under ESMA, the Road Transport Secretary Mr Brahm Dutt said, “We plan to run 15-20 lakh vehicles in the next few days for supply of essential commodities. For this, trucks would be impounded and other private vehicles would be arranged.” More Stories on : Trade & Labour Unions | Roadways
