Corporate Governance
Mr Pramod Bhasin Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee New Delhi, Jan. 9 IT and BPO giants such as Genpact and HCL Technologies are rushing to soothe overseas clients and reassure them on high levels of corporate governance in their own firms, in the aftermath of the disclosures on financial irregularities at Satyam. Genpact has sent a note to its customers and employees saying the company is committed to the highest level of integrity and corporate governance. “We have urged them to view this incident as an isolated case, and not a representation of the entire IT industry or the corporate India in general,” the Genpact President, Mr Pramod Bhasin, told Business Line. Mr Bhasin said that the exercise to reach out to clients would continue over the next few days. “IT and BPO service providers see this as a time to be more open, they are telling their clients that they are open to any scrutiny of their books,” said an analyst referring to the latest round of confidence-building measures by the industry in the wake of the sensational confessions by Satyam Promoter Mr Ramalinga Raju earlier this week. In a similar note to its customers, the HCL Technologies CEO, Mr Vineet Nayar termed the Satyam episode as “unfortunate” coming especially at a time when the industry was grappling with a difficult economic environment. The development is another reason why organisation are selecting partners who have track record of performance, innovation and robust corporate governance structure, HCL said. Re-affirming its commitment to clients, HCL Technologies said that the company would concentrate on the highest levels of ethical and governance standards. When contacted, Mr V. Balakrishnan, CFO, Infosys said that the company would take up client communication on a case-by-case basis. “We will be reactive…If any customer expresses concern, we will address the same,” he said.
