Chennai, Jan. 11 The current global economic recession has thrown up a number of challenges for the corporate world. People-related issues have to be handled with utmost care during this period of crisis and HR has to play a critical role to support businesses in every possible way, said Dr K. Jafar Ali, Director, Centre for Human Renaissance.

He was addressing students of the Narayana Engineering College, Nellore, at a BL Club meeting presented by Indian Overseas Bank.

Questions about the future of business in the minds of personnel across organisations need to be addressed with confidence and conviction, he said.

To keep up the morale of the employees, HR should remain people-sensitive, achievement-focused and development-oriented.

This called for continuous flow of information to ensure that the goodwill and cooperation of the employees was not hurt for want of honest communication.

Organisations were expected to ensure the decision sciences in HR were utilised to develop good human capital metrics.

An integrated HR approach was essential, linking company strategy, pay systems and employee behaviour besides having the right HR structures and practices to help people make the right choices to support business strategy, he said.

HR not limited by title should be pro-active and must support all aspects of organisational competencies to focus on results not activities.

Work life issues such as cultural diversity, loss of jobs, redeployment of manpower and paycuts, should be managed within the spirit of humanising the workplace.

Economic meltdown

The present economic meltdown was a test of time for individuals as well as organisations to raise their level of collective wisdom and performance since the ultimate measure of worth lay not in the moments of comfort and convenience but during crisis, he said.

Also present at the event were Dr B. Dattatreya Sarma, Principal, and Dr K. Sai Kumar, Head, Department of Management.
