Telecommunications Marketing - New Products & Services
Our Bureau New Delhi, Jan. 12 Bharti Airtel on Monday lowered the barrier for lifetime pre-paid mobile cards by announcing that it will offer the service for Rs 99. Currently, Bharti offers lifetime cards at Rs 195, while other operators price it between Rs 145 and Rs 200. Lifetime cards allow subscribers to stay connected by recharging once in six months. Non-lifetime pre-paid cards have a specific validity date after which the subscriber is disconnected if he/she does not recharge. For operators, lifetime prepaid cards are a way to keep the subscriber on their network for a longer duration of time. Existing operators like Airtel are hoping to keep the subscriber churn rate lower through the lifetime cards, especially with a number of new players entering the market. “As an industry leader, Airtel has always been at the forefront of driving affordability and expanding the market. This initiative marks our strategic intent to drive affordability further,” said, Mr Sanjay Gupta, Chief Marketing Officer, Mobile Services, Bharti Airtel Ltd. “The lower price point of Rs 99 will enable a large number of uninitiated rural consumers to go mobile,” he added. Under the new lifetime prepaid, the customer can stay mobile by paying Rs 99 and recharging with a minimum of Rs 200 every 180 days. The scheme will be effective from January 12.
