‘Civil nuclear programme offers scope for big investments’

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Jan. 12 India’s civil nuclear energy programme offered a $160 billion investment opportunity over the next 20 years as the country embarks on ramping up atomic power capacity to an estimated 63,000 MW by the year 2032, Dr. Abhishek Singhvi, MP and Chairman, India-US Forum of Parliamentarians, said here on Monday.

Addressing an ‘Interactive Meeting’ with the visiting USIBC Commercial Nuclear Mission, Dr Singhvi said that it was imperative to amend the Atomic Energy Act of 1962 to facilitate private sector participation in nuclear power generation as it was not possible for the Government alone to cough up the massive requirement of funds for the country’s nuclear power programme.

Mr. Steve Hucik, GE-Hitachi Nuclear and the leader of the USIBC delegation, underlined the need for continuing the momentum in US-India cooperation in all fields.
