Letters Appointment of auditors The reported steps taken by the ICAI such as a cap on tenure and verification of assets are most welcome. At the same time, appointment of auditors from the panel of chartered accountants, maintained by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, can be thought of for all business entities (as it is now done for public sector undertakings and banks) to give auditors the freedom to report any defects without fear since they need not look upon the management for their reappointment. The present system of appointing auditors for banks and public sector companies should not be changed and this should be followed by all limited companies and firms that are subject to audit. M.
