Outlook Industry & Economy - Cinema ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ to release in theatres next week Our Bureau New Delhi, Jan. 13 With four Golden Globe’s adding to its weight, the movie Slumdog Millionaire will finally hit Indian theatres on January 23. Fox Star Studio (FSS) is distributing it in the original and a Hindi version titled Slumdog Crorepati. The Hindi version marks the studio’s first release in India since it started business in September 2008. With A.R. Rahman’s score also winning a Golden Globe, the India strategy to have a deferred release is a good one, says Mr Vijay Singh, CEO, FSS. Though, he added, the movie opened in the UK only last weekend. FSS plans to release 300 prints covering the 80 top cities and towns. The movie, based on the novel Q&A by Vikas Swarup and directed by Danny Boyle, was originally released with just 40 prints in the US, says Mr Singh. The film, its director and cast, have received significant media attention in India too. The movie has British actor Dev Patel, who missed out on a Globe but has been tipped to win an Oscar. It also stars Anil Kapoor and Irfan Khan. Mr Singh is betting on the Hindi version finding appeal even in smaller towns. FSS, the joint venture between Star Networks and Twentieth Century Fox, set up to produce local language movies is also hoping to release its first movie from the deal it announced in October 2008 with the producer of Singh is King, Mr Vipul Shah in the second half of next year.
