Trailer strike at Kochi Port called off

Our Bureau

Kochi, Jan. 13 The weeklong strike by container trailer operators at Kochi Port was called off on Monday night after an agreement between Cochin Container Carrier Owners Association, Custom House Agents Association (CHA) and the port management.

Though the strike was withdrawn on Monday night, the trailer operations resumed only after 15 hours following a protest by a section of trailer workers belonging to BKS.

According to the terms and conditions arrived at the conciliatory meeting, it was decided that the concerned clearing agent, who hired the trailer, should pay the fee absolving the trailer owner from the burden. Besides, the time limit for parking the vehicles within the port premises has been increased from six hours to eight hours of free parking.

The amount of money payable, if any, by way of parking fees will directly deducted from the deposit accounts of the respective CHA or steamer agent on a real time basis.

As far as other agencies who do not maintain deposit account with the port are concerned, payments will be remitted in cash at the toll gates. The new system of collection of parking fee will commence from January 14.

The Port Chairman, Mr N. Ramachandran, said trucks/trailers will be allowed entry into port area based on authorisation issued by CHA/Steamer Agent and other authorised agencies. These agencies will be responsible to ensure that the vehicles do not overstay in the port areas without valid reasons.

The officials at the trailer owners association said the Chairman had assured additional parking space for trailers in the port area apart from the new facility opened recently by a private company.
