Medical Institutions & Hospitals States - West Bengal CordLife opens blood bank in Kolkata Our Bureau Kolkata, Jan. 13 CordLife, a network of private cord blood banks, today launched a cord blood bank in Kolkata with a storage capacity for up to 1.5 lakh cord blood units, said Mr Steven Fang, Group Chief Executive Officer, CordLife Ltd. The blood bank has been licensed by the Central and State Drug Regulatory Authorities, a department within the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India and can collect blood units from all States and cities, Mr Fang said while addressing a press conference here on Tuesday. CordLife has invested about Rs 10 crore in the cord blood bank and plans to expand its presence in other metro cities by the middle of 2009. “We will invest about Rs 30 crore to build a pan-Indian presence starting with the metro cities,” said Mr Fang. CordLife would charge a one-time collection fee of Rs 38,000 and an annual fee of Rs 3,500 for the storage and maintenance of the blood, he pointed out. According to Mr Mark Kirkland, Medical Director of Biocell, a subsidiary of CordLife Ltd, cord blood can be used to treat over 80 diseases including certain cancers such as leukaemia and breast cancer, blood disorders such as thalassemia major and other immunodeficiencies. CordLife operates a network of cord blood banking facilities in Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Australia as well as sales and marketing offices throughout Asia.
