Shubhra Tandon Mumbai, Jan. 13 Jet Airways is in talks with Oman Air and several other airlines for exploring possibilities of leasing out aircraft. “Discussions are on with various airlines, including Oman Air, exploring possibilities of leasing out aircraft,” Mr Saroj K. Dutta, Executive Director, Jet Airways told Business Line. Developments in the last few months in the Indian aviation sector saw carriers embarking on aggressive route rationalisation plans, adopting cost cutting measures and re-looking at their operations. This left carriers like Jet with surplus aircraft, which they have been leasing out. The carrier leased two A330-200 aircraft to Gulf Air, and three B777-300 ER to Turkish Airlines, in December last year. The wet lease agreement with Gulf Air is on till March 2009. Deal with Turkish Airlines will last till May 2009. Without divulging details on agreement with Oman Air, he just said, “Details will be announced once finalised.” According to a media report from Oman, Mr Dutta recently held discussions with the Oman-based carrier, and the announcement is likely in the next few weeks. It added the Indian private sector carrier is negotiating with Gulf Air to lease another three to four B777 aircraft. Plans shelvedThe adverse impact of high fuel prices and falling load factors, in the light of global recession, have already led Jet to withdraw Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco flight from January 13. It has shelved its plans for further international expansion as well, which includes operations to Saudi Arabia.
