Chennai, Feb. 6 “Students graduating from colleges are going to face a challenge getting involved in gainful economic activity,” said Mr R.R. Krishna, Head, People, FL Smidth Ltd.

Speaking at a recently held Business Line Club event, at Sree Vidyanikethan College at Tirupathy, he said that the current economic downturn has lead to layoffs and “zero recruitment” in many Indian companies. According to him, the simplest way to counter this challenge is to face it with a positive mindset.

The event was presented by Indian Overseas Bank.

Emphasising the availability of choices, Mr Krishna added that considering the economic downturn, the aspect of choice becomes even more critical for students in making career decisions.

He pointed out that choice being driven by individual value systems, students could use value frame work tools such as Edward de Bono’s Six Value Medal in designing their value system. Once the value system is defined, he said, “The rest is simple. All your choices will be easy as you will use your value system to benchmark them.”

Further, he emphasised that students must maintain a positive attitude during times like these. “You can look at yourself in the mirror and see yourself as a lion or a cat,” he added.

He drew examples from his professional and personal life to illustrate how a positive attitude can bring the best out of an individual.

“Only as high as you reach can you grow; only as far as you see can you go; only as deep as you look can you see; only as much as you dream can you be,” he added.
