Commonwealth to focus on deliverables

The Commonwealth was focussing on climate change issues through programmes for capacity building for small member States.

New Delhi, Feb. 6 Even as the Commonwealth was willing to discuss the idea of non-sovereign sources of funding for upscaling partnerships among the 53 member countries for inclusive growth and social good, it has set for itself a multi-pronged agenda that focuses on deliverables rather than just fixation of targets, Mr Kamalesh Sharma, Commonwealth Secretary General, said here on Thursday.

Addressing a FICCI meeting on ‘India & the Commonwealth: A Transforming Partnership’, Mr Sharma said: “Capacity building and skill development; youth entrepreneurship, capturing the diaspora for transfer of funds and skills; and technical cooperation were some of the basic elements that were making the Commonwealth a people-oriented organisation.”

He said the Commonwealth was focussing on climate change issues through programmes for capacity building for small member States through awareness creation and demonstrable remedial projects.

Mr Hardeep Puri, Secretary (Economic Relations), Ministry of External Affairs, endorsed the suggestion of FICCI for the creation of a working group on energy security within the Commonwealth.
