Railways Rly freight loading up 2.91% in Jan Our Bureau New Delhi, Feb 10 The freight loading of Indian Railways witnessed a 2.91 per cent growth in January 2009 against the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. The Railways carried 72.44 million tonnes (mt) traffic. The performance – in absolute freight loading and growth rate terms - is almost the same as witnessed by the Railways in December 2008. Indian Railways in December 2008 loaded 72.15 mt of goods, up 2.98 per cent against the same period in the previous fiscal. The numbers for freight loadings show an improvement compared withthe previous two months -- November (1.29 per cent growth) and October when the loadings registered a negative growth of 0.14 per cent. The Government has set a freight target of 850 mt in 2008-09, 7.1 per cent higher than 794 mt last year. For the ten month period of April 2008-January 2009, the Railways carried 681.28 mt of freight traffic, registering a 5.68 per cent growth. On the freight earnings front, Railways mopped up Rs 44,016.26 crore between April 1 and January 31, , registering an increase of 13.64 per cent. More Stories on : Railways
