Gateway Terminals at JNPT inducts 2 new cranes

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Feb. 10 Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd (GTI), the youngest terminal at the Jawaharlal Nehru port, has commissioned two new quay cranes, ramping up the capacity by an additional five lakh teus annually, according GTI sources.

The cranes have been procured from ZPMC of China.

The acquisition, along with other measures, is expected to help GTI scale up capacity to 1.9 million teus in 2009 from 1.3 million teus in 2008.

The other measures, as the sources point out, include increasing by almost 2,000 teus, ground slots and commissioning of 11 new eco-friendly six-high RTGs (rubber-tyred gantries).

The upgradation of capacity and the consequent facilities are expected to lead to improved berth productivity. It is already visible. Thus the berth productivity has improved from 57.96 move/hour in January 2008 to 80.31 move/hour in December 2008.

Which means, larger vessels will have a much better turnaround time of 12 hours for volumes requiring up to 1,800 moves and 24 hours, for volumes up to 4,000 plus moves, given a 5 plus crane split. GTI, therefore, has announced several additional benefits to its customers.

These include 10 days free on export laden boxes and six days for import laden boxes, facility to open second vessel identification advice and three days free on empties, the sources add.
