BAE Systems to unveil Mantis

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Feb. 10 British defence major BAE Systems Mantis is unveiling Mantis, its unmanned aircraft vehicle that is under development, for the first time internationally at the Aero India here.

The final assembly of the first aircraft is under way and this will be followed by a period of ground testing. The first flight is due to take place in a few months. A mock-up Mantis will be demonstrated at the air show and trade expo.

Mantis is jointly funded by the UK’s Ministry of Defence and the industry. During Phase 1, BAE Systems has involved Rolls-Royce, QinetiQ, GE Aviation, SELEX Galileo and Meggitt.

Mr Andy Wilson, Business Development Director with Autonomous Systems and Future Capability at BAE Systems, said: “India has a large projected requirement for UASs and is currently expanding its UAS operations. They are expected to play a significant role in reconnaissance and long endurance surveillance missions in India.”

BAE, which is having its biggest presence at the Aero India and a whole pavilion, brings in yet another UAV, Herti, this time too. Among its displays will be fighter planes Typhoon and Hawk.

A new feature will be a special seating that protects helicopter crew from spinal injuries in crashes and hard landing.
