Chennai, Feb. 10 Building infrastructure efficiency and public infrastructure security are two areas in which Siemens Building Technologies Pvt Ltd sees significant growth in the coming years.

Energy efficiency improvement to control costs and enhancing security in the backdrop of instances of terrorist attacks, are driving industry and governments to focus on building efficiency and security.

These are areas in which Siemens Building Technologies as a market leader will see orders come in briskly despite the general slowdown, according to Mr Anand Mecheri, CEO and Managing Director, SBT India Group.

Chennai facility

Addressing a press conference to announce the launch of a Graphics and Engineering Centre of Competence in Chennai to support its building automation projects in the Asia-Pacific region, he said the facility would strengthen the company’s focus on the markets in India and the Asia-Pacific.

The centre, the first in the region, will provide engineering design, software configuration and graphics development services. It will also drive Siemens Building’s new initiative in India, “maximise efficiency” to upgrade energy efficiency in existing buildings.

The Chennai facility is Siemens Building’s second with a similar facility in Sofia, Bulgaria, which supports its European operations. In the Asia-Pacific, the graphics and engineering operations had been decentralised till now. The company plans to start with 30 engineers initially and scale up operations as needed.

Order outlook

The Chennai centre will help improve efficiency of operations for Siemens Building, which addresses a range of building services for industries and utilities including electronic security, building automation, electrical installation, fire safety, energy efficiency, total building solutions and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning). The company handles consultation, planning and building, operation, maintenance and provides products and systems for all the applications, Mr Mecheri said.

Mr Andreas Schierenbeck, President (Building Automation Division) Siemens Switzerland Ltd, was optimistic that the order inflow for energy efficiency would continue unflagged despite the international economic scenario.

Cost savings and security continue high on the priority in the current situation.

Siemens Building has been in modernising and upgrading energy efficiency for more than a decade. It estimates that the 7,500 buildings it has modernised in this period have contributed to an energy savings of €1.5 billion and prevented carbon dioxide emissions of over 700,000 tonnes a year.
