Ashok Leyland Feb sales down 57%

Our Bureau

Chennai, March 4 Ashok Leyland has reported a 57 per cent drop in February sales to 3,245 units against 7,501 units it sold in the corresponding period last year. However, the company’s sales increased by one-third over January, when it sold 2,444 units.

The drop was severe in the medium and heavy duty vehicles segment — a core business area for Ashok Leyland. In this segment, it sold 1,438 vehicles in February compared with 5,554 vehicles in the corresponding period last year.

Company sources said the sales picked up due to a section of fleet operators wanting to leverage depreciation benefits. Asked if the reduction in excise duty helped boost sales, the official observed that it was not the price, but sentiment, that was holding back sales.
