Telecommunications Corporate - Outlook Aircel to invest $1 b in expansion this year Our Bureau Hyderabad, March 12 Telecom services provider Aircel Ltd plans to invest $1 billion to expand its network in the country before December. “The investment will go into expanding the footprint of Aircel in North India as we have spread our presence in southern and north-eastern corridors,” Mr Gurudeep Singh, Chief Operating Officer, Aircel Ltd, told newspersons after launch of services here on Thursday. The investment would be part of its plans to invest $5 billion over next three to five years, he said, adding that the company had invested $2 billion so far. Fund mobilisationOn fund mobilisation in the context of current economic slowdown, Mr Singh said: “We are sufficiently equipped to mobilise funds. All options, including debt or equity, may be considered.” Stating that the recession did not impact telephony in India yet, Mr Singh said the subscriber base for the industry had actually increased in the last three months. “I don’t see any adverse impact for the next two quarters, at least,” he added. Investing Rs 500 cr in APIn Andhra Pradesh, Aircel had already invested Rs 500 crore and would invest another Rs 500 crore in creating infrastructure such as base stations. “In the next 60 days, our network will cover all major towns in Andhra Pradesh,” Mr Singh said. Aircel has entered into agreements with other companies to share their infrastructure such as towers in the State, he added. The total subscriber base of Aircel, which is present in the South, North East and Jammu and Kashmir, now stands at over 17 million.
