RCom unveils new wireless Net service

Service will be launched in 35 cities soon.

Mumbai, March 12 Reliance Communications Ltd on Thursday launched a new wireless Internet service based on the CDMA technology. The company claims that the service has downlink speed of up to 3.1 Mbps and uplink speed of up to 1.8 Mbps.

The company said the new service would be called Reliance Netconnect Broadband Plus. The service would be soon launched in 35 cities, including Guntur, Hyderabad, Kakinada, Bangalore, Mysore, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Mumbai and Delhi.

It is suited for video streaming, video surveillance, and Internet browsing.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Mahesh Prasad, President of Reliance Communications, said the company expects that the average revenue per user (ARPU) to be in the range of Rs 600-850 for the services.

The ARPU on account of ‘Reliance Netconnect’ the existing wireless Internet service is about Rs 500-800, he said.

Mr Prasad declined to give information about the capex incurred for rolling out the new service. He said the company has only upgraded the network’s software for launching the new service.

Tariff plan

He said that the subscribers will have to buy a new device for Rs 3,500 and select a monthly tariff plan, which varies from Rs 299 to Rs 1,750 for accessing the service.

Customers opting for unlimited plan will have cap of 50 GB of data usage. Capping usage in an unlimited plan is a global practice, Mr Prasad said.
