Areva’s Hosur unit goes on stream

Our Bureau

Bangalore, April 1 Areva T&D India, the transmission and distribution division of French major Areva, on Wednesday inaugurated its manufacturing unit at Hosur. The company has invested €18 million (Rs 117 crore) in the facility, which will be manufacturing instrument transformers up to 1,200 kV and condenser bushing. It also houses an instrument transformer competency centre to support high level global research and development.

Addressing a press conference here, after the inauguration of the facility by the Tamil Nadu Minister for Electricity Mr Arcot Veeraswami, the global Chairman and CEO of Arevea T&D (Transmission & Distribution), Mr Phillippe Guillemot, said the economic slowdown had not had any impact on its investment plans in India which he felt had a robust energy equipment market.

He said with demand for electricity estimated to grow by 161 GW (gegawatt) by 2020, significant investment will be made in the electrical grid. This would give a boost to Areva’s order book currently estimated at Rs 4,000 crore.

Its sales revenue last year was Rs 2,600 crore. Areva has made a fresh investment of Rs 950 crore in three facilities at Vadodara in Gujarat, Hosur and Padappai in Tamil Nadu for transformer and gas insulated substation systems.

Answering a question, Mr Guillemot said the company would be eyeing new opportunities for supply of transmission and distribution systems in the civilian nuclear projects that India was planning.
