Hyderabad, April 1 Employees availing themselves of the benefits of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) are also eligible for claiming reimbursements from their health insurance policies.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has removed the monetary cap on reimbursement of medical expenses and permitted the Government employees to claim reimbursement of medical expenditure from the insurance agencies and CGHS.

According to a circular from the Ministry which is hosted by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority on its Web site, the reimbursement from the two sources, however, should not exceed the package rates prescribed under the CGHS for the particular treatment.

The beneficiary would make the first claim to the insurance company and the second claim to the CGHS or the ministry/department concerned.

All the claims from February 4, are eligible for dual reimbursement.

IMPACT

Though, there may not be any major impact on health insurance industry with this norm, the authority had pushed for the removal of the cap on double reimbursement as it is expected to drive interest in health insurance in the large number of Government employees,” said an IRDA official.
