Monsanto to invest Rs 50 cr in research

Our Bureau

Ahmedabad, April 1 Monsanto Company will invest Rs 50 crore to establish its Beachell-Borlaug International Scholars Program, to fund research and production of rice and wheat, through plant breeding techniques, according to a company release.

The programme will be conducted by Texas AgriLife Research of the US-based Texas A&M University System for the next five years.

“Research in these two staple crops has fallen behind and it is my hope this programme will help jumpstart additional investment in two of the world’s most important grains. We encourage any eligible rice or wheat breeders around the world to apply for the award,” said Dr Ed Runge, Program Director.

“Young scientists who receive this scholarship will have the opportunity to further their training and work with world-renown rice experts working on projects that are making a real difference to people’s lives,” said Dr Robert Zeigler, Director-General, International Rice Research Institute.

Students interested in applying to the programme can find more details at www.monsanto.com/mbbischolars.

Applications will be accepted until May 31.
