Railways Surge in Paradip rail traffic East Coast Railway (ECoR) is happy that the rail-borne traffic to and from Paradip port is showing an upward trend. The happiness is not merely because the ECoR is getting additional traffic but also because it has contributed to a better environment and lower burning of costlier fuel. In 2007-08, the throughput was 34.36 million tonnes (mt), comprising 21.52 mt of inward traffic and 12.84 mt of outward traffic, as compared to 30.79 mt — comprising 19.92 mt of inwar d and 10.87 mt of outward traffic — in 2007-08, thus posting nearly 11 per cent growth. The railway sources would attribute it to better availability of rakes, both inward and outward. For example, in the Banspani-Jakhapura section, which was commissioned in 2007-8, the average daily loading of iron ore for exports and domestic steel plants more than doubled to around 10 rakes. But then, port authorities too claim smooth and hassle-free railway operation at the port end; otherwise, the rakes moving into the port with iron ore exports would not have been readily available for back-loading of imported coal, both for powerhouses and steel plants.
